a serendipitous sip of beer

Once upon a time in a shady patch of earth

A prickly, chubby, hedgehog started to give birth.

The hoglets she produced were quite a sight to see

An albino they call Gud and her brother they called Lee.

The pups they loved exploring especially here and there

And although, at first, they promised to stay near

To their family home, it soon became quite clear

That despite their parents’ warnings they didn’t want to hear.

Gud was very timid and extremely shy

The opposite of Lee, who was a real tough guy

He riled his little sis all throughout the day

And teased about her colour, much to her dismay.

Lee’s attitude persisted for almost half a year

Until one day in June when Gud discovered beer.

Snuffling round a garden like a hedgehog oughta

She came across a pot, sat upon a saucer

Which was used for stopping snails and such

From damaging the plants too much.

Gud slurped a drop and felt elated

‘Twas now Lee’s turn to be berated.

You’ve teased and joked and it’s been torrid

As a bro you are quite horrid.

Lee could not believe his ears

And started shedding tears.

Just ‘cos you’re a boy and a normal colour

At end of day you’re still my brother.

Your goal in life, that you should realise,

Is me to love, not terrorize

Or cheek, or hurt or make real sad

Is this who you are or are you just bad?

Well! You could have heard a pin drop.

Lee, this behaviour you must stop

We were born on the same day

If you can’t change then you must go away.

Lee looked at Gud, stopped in his tracks,

Battered down by all her facts.

I’m sorry Gud he sobbed and cried

As he tried to dry his eyes

I’ve been a beast and most unkind

From this day on you will find

I’ll mend my ways and take more care

Of my special ‘bino soeur.

From that day on all was changed

They laughed like hogs who were deranged

They helped each other when ‘twas needed

All disagreements were conceded.

Their parents they were quite confounded.

But to this day they never found out

What had brought this change about

Why Lee no longer gave his sister lip

‘Cos of a serendipitous beer sip.

The hogs lived on for many years

Had many kids, but no more beer.
